Cannabis Retail Stores in Grey Highlands

As of October 17th, 2018 adults (19+) in Ontario may purchase Cannabis from the online Ontario Cannabis Store and may publicly possess up to 30g of Cannabis. The rules that apply to where cigarettes can be smoked (Smoke Free Ontario Act) apply similarly to Cannabis.

In Spring of 2019, the Province of Ontario plans to permit privately owned retail Cannabis outlets, in addition to the online Ontario Cannabis Store. These stores will be supplied by the Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation only. These stores and their operators will be licensed by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), following a mandatory local notification period and will be subject to strict rules around storage, signage, and promotions.

The Province has given each Municipality a one-time opportunity to decide whether or not they want to host retail Cannabis outlets within their borders.

If Council decides to ‘Opt Out’, then retail Cannabis outlets will not be permitted in the Municipality of Grey Highlands and will not be eligible for additional provincial funding related to the legislation.

If Council decides to ‘Opt In’, retail Cannabis outlets would be allowed, subject to licensing by the AGCO. The decision to ‘Opt In’ cannot be reversed to prohibit retail Cannabis outlets later on. The Province requires that this decision be made by January 22nd, 2019 with additional funding available to those municipalities that opt-in prior to this date.

We are asking for your feedback on the matter as to whether Grey Highlands should 'Opt In' or 'Opt Out' of the retail sales program.

Please fill out the quick survey to have your say on the matter. All responses will be provided to Council before making a decision. Thank you for your participation.
