Project Updates

Traffic Notice: Traffic will be reduced to a single lane, 3.3 metres wide, with traffic control in place. Due to traffic volumes, controllers will allow a limited number of vehicles into the community at a time to ensure the safety of residents, motorists, and workers. Oversized and wide-load trucks must use an alternate route.

Council Approval: In October 2022, Council approved the Connecting Link Markdale Project.

Grant Application: In October 2025, Council supported staff in applying for the 2026/2027 Connecting Link Markdale grant.

Media Release Issued: On March 9, 2026, Ontario announced a $5 million investment toward the reconstruction of Toronto Street in Markdale.

Construction Contract Awarded: Council awarded the construction contract for the Connecting Link Markdale project at the July 8, 2026, Council meeting.

Construction Update: Crews will mobilize the week of July 27, 2026, to install project signage, with construction work scheduled to begin the week of August 4, 2026.


Traffic Conditions and Public Access:

The roads will be reduced to a single lane during construction, with an average lane width of 3.4 m, to allow access for certain trucks and transit buses through the site. Trucks and other vehicles, such as farm machinery, wider than the lane reduction, will need to find alternative routes. Working hours are generally from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. If required, notice will be provided for any work taking place outside of these hours or on Saturday. The Contractor will provide traffic management measures, including signage, traffic control persons, and barriers. Additional traffic control assistance will be provided by OPP officers as required. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. We encourage those residents with mobility limitations to contact the project team so their specific needs can be addressed during construction.


Public Parking:

No public parking during construction will be permitted within closed, active construction, areas on Highway 10. The Contractor will be on-site to coordinate and communicate with pedestrians and motorists on where to park.

Weekly Updates

August 17 - 21, 2026:

  • Excavation of the southbound lane will continue, starting at the north end and moving south throughout the week.
  • Crews will be removing curb and installing subdrain in the southbound lane.
  • Sidewalk widening work is underway on the west side of the road.
  • Sidewalk closures are in place where needed due to trip hazards.
  • Asphalt removal in driveway
  • areas on the west side of the road, down to Cavan Street, will continue.
  • Sidewalk excavation work will continue throughout the week.

Safety Reminder: Safety is our top priority. Residents are reminded to follow all posted traffic signs and obey speed limits when travelling through the construction zone. Thank you for your cooperation.

August 10 - 14, 2026:

  • Monday: Well decommissioning begins at nine locations across Markdale. Traffic control will be in place throughout town.
  • Tuesday: Road milling starts from the north end of town to Grey Road 12. Expect delays due to heavy equipment and truck traffic. Driveways will remain accessible with temporary gravel ramps. Watch for raised manholes and valves marked in orange.
  • Wednesday onward: Excavation, curb, and sidewalk removal begin on the northwest side of town for drainage work. Access to homes and businesses will be maintained, but delays are expected.

August 4 - 7, 2026: Temporary signage and safety fencing will be installed, project work areas will be identified and marked, and construction materials and equipment will be delivered to the site.

Project Background

It was announced in early March 2026 that Grey Highlands had been selected for funding through the Ministry of Transportation's 2026-27 Connecting Link Program to receive up to $5,000,000 of the overall project costs for reconstructing Toronto Street in Markdale. This project had been approved as part of the 2026 budget, pending funding approval.

R.J. Burnside and Associates prepared the tender package and it was issued on Biddingo in accordance with the Procurement By-law on May 22, 2026, closing June 18, 2026.

Additional details will be provided once a contractor has been awarded by Council.

Project FAQ

The Work includes the reconstruction of Highway 10 Connecting Link (Toronto Street) approximately 1460 m, in the Town of Markdale, from approximately Fairway Heights to 365 m east of Uplands Drive.

The work includes reconstruction of road base, storm structure rehabilitation,

sanitary sewer upgrades between Cavan Street to Main Street, traffic signal

and signage improvements, installation of sidewalks, curb and gutters,

pavement markings, traffic management and restoration of all disturbed areas

Where work is located within driveways or entrances to dwellings and/or businesses, access will be restricted but will be fully restored as quickly as possible after the work is completed.

The Contractor will give prior notice of any pedestrian and/or vehicular access restrictions to the residents and businesses. We ask for your patience in such instances.

Access for emergency vehicles will always be provided.

Any interruptions to telephone, electrical, gas and other utilities and services are not anticipated. However, if you lose any of your services, please contact the Public Relations Officer.

The Contractor will ensure that regular garbage and recycling collection will be maintained during the construction activities. It may be necessary for the Contractor to collect the garbage and recycling containers, take them to a designated area to be collected and returned to individual properties on each garbage and recycling day during construction operations.

If required, please be sure to clearly label your containers with your address (street name and number) so that they can be returned.
