Overview
The Municipality of Grey Highlands is exploring the relocation and future design of the Markdale memorial and cenotaph.
This project began after Council directed staff to review options for relocating the memorial currently located at 206 Toronto Street South. The County of Grey has requested that the memorial assets be moved to municipally owned property to support the future expansion of Grey Gables.
The goal of this project is to create a respectful, accessible, and lasting commemorative space that honours local veterans while reflecting community input.
This will be a community-driven process. Residents, veterans, families, and community partners will have opportunities to learn about the project, share feedback, and help shape the final design.
Key objectives include:
- honouring veterans and preserving local history
- creating a permanent and accessible memorial space
- ensuring transparency through public engagement
- designing a memorial that reflects community values
Council is considering 106 Eliza Street as the preferred new location, and a community task force will help guide the project moving forward.
